Vanessa is a genus of brush-footed butterflies in the tribe Nymphalini. It has a near-global distribution and includes conspicuous species such as the red admirals (e.g., red admiral, Indian red admiral, New Zealand red admiral), the Kamehameha, and the painted ladies of the Cynthia group (formerly a subgenus): Painted lady, American painted lady, West Coast lady, Australian painted lady, etc. To start, we are sampling one "exemplar" species from each butterfly genus (1815 total) extremely thoroughly. Within a genus are one or more species; a species is defined as a group of individuals that are capable of breeding and producing fertile offspring.

The map below showcases (in blue) the states and territories of North America where the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail may be found (but is not limited to). Butterfly migration is best exemplified by the Monarch, which is widely known to migrate in the fall to overwintering sites in California and Mexico. Some species lay eggs singly, others in batches. If a butterfly has a significant amount of orange coloring to its wings, then it is most likely included here. There are an estimated 12,000 to 20,000 species of recognized butterflies on Earth. The Viceroy is an edible species that mimics the Monarch in the western states. For example, the dog, wolf and coyote are all in the genus Canis and are all very genetically similar. Butterfly Genus Species Butterflies are members of the kingdom Animalia, phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, and order Lepidoptera. It offers accurate and useful information about many of the orange butterfly species in North America and Europe. Butterflies pollinate plants as they feed on nectar. We are using a specially designed anchored hybrid enrichment probe set to target around 500 loci within the generalized butterfly genome. The order Lepidoptera consists of more than 155,000 species of butterflies, moths, and skippers. Butterflies' colors come from tiny scales which cover the wings; colors may aid them in species recognition and camouflage, or by warning away predators. This is an alphabetically ordered list of significant butterflies and moths, grouped by A revision of the new Andean butterfly genus Optimandes Marín, Nakahara & Willmott, n. gen., with the description of a new species (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Euptychiina) Within the families, butterflies are categorized into subfamilies, with each butterfly then falling into a unique genus and species.

But in the United States, several other butterfly species engage in lesser migration distances.
The butterflies of North America are many and varied, and to identify butterflies, you will probably need some help.
