Little flocks of Black-capped Chickadees enliven the winter woods with their active behavior and their cheery-sounding chick-a-dee callnotes as they fly from tree to tree, often accompanied by an assortment of nuthatches, creepers, kinglets, and other birds.
1-3 Days Old: Black-capped chickadee nestlings, like most songbird young, are altricial (born naked and blind). Black-capped Chickadees breed in spring using nesting cavities such as in a tree and also in nesting boxes. However, if you are convinced that you have found a fledgling that does need assistance, there are some things that can be done to help it. Carolina Chickadee. The curious, intelligent Carolina Chickadee looks very much like a Black-capped Chickadee, with a black cap, black bib, gray wings and back, and whitish underside.

Chickadees hoard food, so they scavenge the area to find seeds and insects. These birds look very similar to the Black-capped Chickadee, but the Carolina Chickadee has less white coloring along the outer edges and tips of its wings. I tracked it for five minutes. As compared to the Black-capped the white at its cheek and neck is more grey in color and it has a lighter back than the Black-capped. April 23- Hatch day. Robin Fledgling Fully Graduated. It may look like this young bird has left the nest too soon.
This birdhouse is near my driveway and when I drove by I noticed this Carolina Chickadee fledgling looking out. Chickadees are tiny birds that like to feed in flocks.

When disturbed in its nest during incubation, it will hiss and strike intruders, similar to how a snake would act. A fledgling is a baby bird that has just left its nest. Black-capped and Carolina chickadees have mostly separate ranges (north and south) but on the chickadee border they hybridize.Marcy’s house is on the chickadee border so she can’t say for sure which species nests here. It stayed in the cherry tree for a minute or so, looking all about, carefully watching an ant that walked along the branch it was on, and then it flitted above the lawn to another tree, and another. Fluttering furiously on those short wings, it flies a short distance to the safety of a nearby bush.
I had a pair of Carolina Chickadees nest in one of my nest boxes this spring. It’s a fledgling: fully feathered, but with wings and tail still looking a bit stubby.
I parked and got this photo. These little birds are the largest of the wrens found in the USA, and play an important role in the eco-system.
Living in milder climates, it has been reported to be less of a visitor to bird feeders, but it does come into suburban yards for sunflower seeds.
